Abstracted Realities at First Studio

I am excited to announce my next show, Abstracted Realities, presented by First Studio Gallery from December 1, 2021 through January 28, 2022. This show features works by three artists: acrylic painter Barbara Kemp Cowlin from Oracle, AZ;  aerosol painter Indigo from Grand Junction, CO; and yours truly.

Abstracted Realities

My part in Abstracted Realities includes four oil paintings completed within the last year, along with over twenty photographs spanning the last four years. This is the largest body of work I’ve exhibited since 2017 and features many works that have not yet been shown publicly from my Ambiguity, STUCCOLAND!, Concrete Evidence, and In Honor Of series. I am excited to debut many of these—especially my non-photographic works—for the first time.

If you’ve been following my work for a while you may know that I experienced major burnout when my job as a photography teacher transitioned to online classes during the height of the pandemic. Having to spend all day long on my work computer left me with screen exhaustion and little motivation to work with my photographs in the digital darkroom. Since I can’t abstain from making art very long, I delved back into painting for the first time in almost fifteen years (and my first time with oils). However, I have no plans to abandon photography and I am excited to see how these new experiences with painting will inform my work going forward, regardless of medium.
