Dunguaire Castle

Dunguaire CastleDunguaire Castle sits just outside the village of Kinvara overlooking Galway Bay.  The castle was built in 1520 and has changed hands many times and undergone many renovations and restorations before becoming the property of Shannon Development where it now serves as a tourist attraction and a link to Ireland’s history.

We traveled to Kinvara often during our stay in New Quay because it was home to the nearest market.  I was able to poke around in the castle for a little while, climbing all the way to the top and stepping out onto the narrow walkway (at times so narrow I had to turn sideways to slip through) surrounding the roof.  From the top I saw a spectacular view of Galway Bay, the Burren hills and Kinvara.  The water surrounding the castle featured some beautiful swans who, unfortunately, did not come in close enough to be in this shot.
